Kevin Cahill

Gary Herling was an excellent physicist and a gentleman. After a sterling career at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, he became an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of New Mexico. Over 25 years, he did research with several of us and wrote many papers on lattice gauge theory, atomic physics, and medical physics. His high levels of intellect, politeness, humility, and activity were an example to us all, and we are better for his presence among us. We all will miss him as long as we are alive.
